Summary
This thesis examines the domestic politics of economic globalization in Sweden, focusing on how key actors in Swedish politics conceptualize international trade and foreign direct investments and how this translates into public policy advocacy. Sweden is highly dependent on international trade and capital markets, with trade contributing significantly to its status as one of the world's wealthiest nations.
Trade dependence has had a profound influence on Swedish economic and industrial policy, reflected in a strong commitment to free trade. Emerging pressures on international economic cooperation, referred to as the "globalization backlash," complicate Sweden's commitment to free trade. This includes populist contestation of the economic and cultural implications of globalization and the geopoliticization of economic globalization.
The imperatives of trade dependence imply that rejection of international markets is unlikely and costly. This thesis examines how Swedish labor, business, and political parties balance trade dependence with the complexities of modern-day economic globalization.
