Summary
This thesis builds on focus groups and interviews with 72 participants (50 male, 22 female) across 10 municipalities in Norway to explore how Norwegian Muslims experience social exclusion and inclusion within Norwegian society.
The primary contribution of this thesis lies in its empirical demonstration, and theoretical development, of three differential experiences tied to social exclusion, and inclusion, amongst my interlocutors.
In abstract, I theorize Norwegian Muslim experiences with social exclusion as lived misrecognition and non-recognition, and their experiences with inclusion as lived recognition. I also demonstrate how these concepts complement, and challenge, contemporary uses of other related concepts, particularly Islamophobia and racialization.
