Summary
The thesis explores the lending of e-books and e-audiobooks in public libraries in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. E-lending operates by licensing schemes, which alter public libraries’ access to digital books and challenge their societal mandate. The thesis asks what the implications of introducing digital book lending for the public library as an institution are.
The dissertation consists of three empirical studies. The first analyses lending models, while the second explores institutional frameworks for e-lending within the library field. The third study examines the relationship between libraries and publishers and their respective perceptions of the library’s role. The main conclusions are that libraries adapt to market mechanisms in many different ways; they create new institutional structures, and they relate to the book market, which is influenced by digitalisation. The dissertation highlights the similarities and differences in the approaches to e-lending across three Scandinavian countries.
