In this ph.d. project, I will examine the ethics of nudging in relation to informed consent.
Part of the goal of the project is to answer the following question: Can doctors nudge patients toward accepting a certain treatment plan without violating the patient’s informed consent to said treatment plan?
In order to answer this question I will among other things present and defend a new definition of nudging, discuss the limits of the principle of autonomy and argue for the need for and rightness of a conception of welfare that allows for robust and objective judgments about individuals by third parties in certain circumstances.
