Palliative care for children and adolescents in Oslo Municipality, Søndre Nordstrand

The purpose of the project is to increase participation through strengthened and seamless services for children with life-threatening and/or life-limiting conditions and their families.

The pediatric palliative care resource team is a municipal, management-anchored initiative aimed at increasing service providers' competence in palliative care for children and adolescents (0–18) and ensuring better services for the children, adolescents, and their families.

Pediatric palliative care is comprehensive treatment, care, and support for children and youth living with a life-threatening and/or life-limiting condition.

The goal is the best possible quality of life for the child, the child's siblings, and parents/legal guardians from the time of diagnosis, throughout the entire course of the illness, and in the follow-up of the families.

Children and families prefer to be at home as much as possible if arrangements are made for it and they can receive the follow-up they need in their local community.

To facilitate good and seamless services, the Søndre Nordstrand district established an interdisciplinary municipal pediatric palliative resource team in 2025, consisting of service providers from health, kindergarten and education, and from the coordinating units in the district.
