Public Health Nutrition

Would you like to study nutrition and nutrition policies with a public health perspective in an international context? Public Health Nutrition is a specialisation in Health Sciences.

  • Admission requirements

    To apply for this programme you must have:

    • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of 80 ECTS credits in food/nutrition sciences or public health where at least 30 of the 80 ECTS credits must be in nutrition
    • an average grade of at least C (according to the ECTS grading scale) for your bachelor's degree
    • proof of your English proficiency

    Applicants are ranked based on the grade average of their bachelor's degree.

  • How to apply

    You apply via Søknadsweb, where you fill in your details and upload all the required documents.

    There are different application deadlines based on which country you apply from:

    • 1 November: for applicants from countries outside of the European Union / the European Economic Area (EEA) / Switzerland
    • 1 March: early admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
    • 15 April: ordinary admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
  • Programme cost

    For students from the EU/EEA/EFTA the only cost of this programme is the semester fee (student.oslomet.no) of approximately NOK 1,000, which you pay each semester of the programme. For these students there are no tuition fees.

    For students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA there are tuition fees in addition to the semester fee (student.oslomet.no).

  • Programme content

    The programme in Public Health Nutrition is a specialisation within the Master's in Health Sciences.

    You will develop knowledge and skills needed to assess and address the extent, causes and consequences of diet and nutritional challenges among different groups of the population.

    You will gain insight into health-promoting and preventive work and how different strategies and measures that promote healthy and sustainable diets can be implemented and evaluated.

    The programme also provides insight into key political actors and processes relating to food and nutrition. It includes national and global perspectives with particular focus on the relationship between food systems, diet and sustainability.

    You will be able to:

    • gain insight into how food and nutrition policy, as well as social, cultural, economic and climate-related factors, relate to the health and nutrition situation at a local, national and global level
    • learn how to monitor and assess the extent and causes of diet and nutritional challenges among different population groups
    • use theories, models and strategies, as well as knowledge of political actors and processes to plan, implement and evaluate nutrition-related, health promoting and preventive interventions and policies
    • promote equitable access to safe, healthy and sustainable food through all life phases at a local, national and global level.

  • How the programme is taught

    The first two semesters consist of theoretical courses in public health nutrition as well as research methods, a course in quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based practice.  

    During the third semester you have the opportunity to choose elective courses at OsloMet, go on exchange and take elective courses at a partner institution or spend time towards your thesis, which can be completed either as a 30 ECTS credits or 50 ECTS credits course. 

    Some of the courses are taught jointly with other specialisations in Health Sciences.

    You can go on an exchange and take elective courses at one of OsloMets partner institutions during your third semester.

    You can also go on exchange while writing your master’s thesis to conduct research, join a research network at a partner institution or do fieldwork.
