The department of Product Design has vacant a PhD fellowship position in material-based product innovation and creative competence. This position will be affiliated with the Department of Product Design and the research group Design, Culture, and Sustainability, offering a platform for cutting-edge research and academic growth. Product Design has top modern research laboratories and workshop facilities for product innovation and materials research at OsloMet, Campus Kjeller, where design, art, and technology meet.

Area of research

This PhD project aims to expand knowledge about creativity that stimulates product innovation. Methodologically, the research project belongs to basic research, and the candidate will develop knowledge about how human creativity manifests in the interaction between analog processes, different technologies, and artificial intelligence. An example of criteria for exploring creative knowledge is the interaction between intuition and intention in creative processes. Artistic research methods are emphasized to promote experimental processes leading to innovative solutions.

In the project, it is possible to work within a wide range of materials, technologies, and product areas within design and art. Examples of factors for product innovation may be the exploration of aesthetic means, function, and sensory experience. The development of products with sustainable approaches is central.

Artificial intelligence challenges the creative disciplines such as design and art. In this project, it is important to place the human being and the freedom of creative processes and materialized product innovation at the center of the research.

The position is advertised as a 3-year position with 100% research, or a 4-year position with 75% research and 25% other tasks (teaching, supervision and/or administrative work). The goal must be to complete the PhD program/degree within the decided time frame. The decision on a 3- or 4-year position will be discussed as part of the interviews in the hiring process.
