Summary
Rising art prices, limited acquisition budgets, increasing operating costs, stagnant or decreasing revenues, and increased competition for visitors mean that publicly funded art museums face a number of challenges. These challenges are further exacerbated by a global museum boom, as well as a significant increase in private collectors and art museums. As a result, publicly funded art museums are increasingly dependent on collaboration with private art collectors to enrich their collections and loan works for exhibitions.
In Norway, large collaborations between publicly funded art museums and private art collectors are a relatively new trend. This challenges established norms and raises concerns among actors in the art field. By analyzing the media debate around the collaboration agreement between the National Museum and the Fredriksen Family Art Company Ltd., and by interviewing museum directors and private art collectors, this thesis provides insight into these actors' perspectives. The aim of the thesis is to understand the tensions, challenges, and opportunities these collaborations lead to.
