The project aims to map the relationship between growing up with strict parental restrictions and domestic violence based on data from the YouthViolence 2023 survey.
Several Norwegian studies have shown that a significant proportion of youth with minority backgrounds, particularly young women, experience restrictions and control from parents and extended family that limit their life choices and right to govern their own lives. An ongoing discussion is to what extent such restrictive and controlling parenting practices are part of more extensive regimes of violence in the family.
In this project, NOVA will map the extent of parental restrictions and what associations can be found between such restrictions and domestic violence among high school students based on the YouthViolence 2023 survey. The study will map parental restrictions both among minority youth and in the population at large.
The findings will be presented in a NOVA report.
