Programme content

Today's cloud-based services must be designed for several thousands, even millions, of users. This requires infrastructure and architecture beyond pure web servers and databases.

This specialization in cloud-based services and operations focuses on the process of developing, deploying and managing large-scale services, where software is delivered faster and with higher quality than before.

This combines an understanding of how

  • modern development teams work
  • parts of the development process can be automated to achieve higher efficiency
  • a service can be supported by an operational infrastructure to make it robust and flexible enough to scale a world audience.

The study has a practical aim of delivering technical competence – and a bird's eye view – of how the IT industry and academia meet the demands of a digitized society.

As a student, you will

  • learn more about the role large cloud-based services play in a digitized society
  • gain technical skills and unique knowledge that can make you a valuable member of a software engineering or operations team
  • be able to understand, and be able to discuss, the current challenges of cloud-based operations

Programme description (student.oslomet.no)

How the programme is taught

This master’s programme with specialisation in Cloud-based Services and Operations is organised as a two-year full-time study.

You write a master's thesis of either 30 or 60 credits, where you get time to immerse yourself in ongoing research at OsloMet, or you can work on a concrete and limited project of your own choosing.

All courses are taught in English.

The programme focuses on active forms of learning, where you learn advanced theory through the practical use of technology.

You will be expected to take responsibility in your studies, because a completed master's degree must be proof of a good ability to work independently. Therefore, the study's teaching is more closely organized at the beginning than towards the end, where the choices and responsibility rest to a greater extent on you as a student.

You will have a variety of

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • digital learning tools
  • group work
  • individual work
  • lab work

Career

The specialisation in Cloud-based Services and Operations produces qualified senior professionals to both the public and private sectors, for example consulting engineers, and professionals in innovation and development.

It is not uncommon to get positions such as manager, team leader, subject manager or project manager after a few years of working experience.

As a technologist, you are not tied to a particular sector or industry. Technologists work in health, education, entertainment, public transport and everything else you see around you.

An advantage of studying technology is that you don't have to decide which sector you want to work in from the start of your studies. You can change paths during your career.

The degree also qualifies for PhD programmes, if you are interested in pursuing more advanced studies after graduation, depending on your specialization and grades.
