Professor Niclas Karlssons forskning fokuserer på rollen til glykosylering i menneskers helse. Glykaner er allestedsnærværende i biologiske grensesnitt, inkludert glykokalyx på cellemembraner, på slimhinneoverflater som beskytter mage-tarm-, lunge- og reproduktive kanaler og leddene i muskelskjelettsystemet. Gruppen bruker state-of-the-art massespektrometrisk og HPLC-basert glykomikk og glykoproteomikk av både N-linked og O-linked glykoproteiner for å identifisere patologisk endring av glykosyleringen.
