Lihong Huang har en master (M.A.) i Barnehagesutdanning (1996) fra Kina, en master (M.Phil) i Comparative and International Education fra Norge (UiO, 2002) og doktorgrad (Dr.Philos) i International Education fra Sverige (Stockholms universitet, 2005). Årsaker til og langsiktige konsekvensene av læringsresultat, læringsmiljø, og sosiale og psykologiske velvære av barna og ungdom i skole er blant hennes viktigste forskingsinteresser i dag. Andre interesser er politikk, økonomi, sosial ulikhet i utdanningssystemene og ungdoms deltakelser i samfunnet i Europa og i internasjonal sammenheng. Hun har vært medlem til Europeisk ungdomsforskeres nettverk (PEYR) 2011-2016, prosjektleder til den Norske studien av International Civic and Citzenship Education Study (ICCS 2016), er medarbeider ved Voldsprogrammet - Forskningsprogram om vold i nære relasjoner og Norges representant ved COST Action European Network for Environmental Citizenship (2017-2022), en medlem i reduksjon til tidsskriftet YOUNG.
